Because there are externalities to segwit and taproot that allow people to create transactions stuffed with relatively large amounts of arbitrary data (like jpegs). Since many of these people have no intention of spending from these transaction outputs, this poses a long-term risk to nodes that have to use their resources to keep track of these UTXO's forever.
Boosting the OP_RETURN limit is a limp-wristed minor rebalancing of the incentives that allow people to store arbitrary data in bitcoin in a way that is less of a resource drain on the nodes that run the network. It likely won't work, but at worst, we have the same problem we had before they raised the default limit.
Core doesnt know how to solve spam, and it looks like they're content to quietly admit to themselves they broke bitcoin a little trying to scale. They'll never admit it publicly though.
And knots does the know how to solve it either, but that won't stop them from saying they can, if only they could overwhelm 85-95% of the network, which they never will.

"Sometimes you put walls up not to keep people out, but to see who cares enough to break them down."
How US Special Forces Infiltrated Venezuela?
The CIA tracked his 'Pattern of Life', what he ate, what he wore, and exactly where he slept.
They didn't just guess; they knew. Back in the US, Delta Force built an exact replica of his safe house, rehearsing the raid until they could do it blindfolded.
And the blowtorches? Those were for the panic room. Intelligence knew Maduro slept behind bank-vault-style steel doors. The team brought heavy-duty thermal cutters to burn him out.
But in the end, speed was their weapon. Operators breached the room so fast, they caught him before he could even lock the door.

Hacker Beach is a month-long, spontaneous, self-organized gathering of hackers and like-minded people on a tropical island (or coast). It happens every year in January.
There is no organization, no prepackaged deal, no tickets to purchase, or registration forms to submit. The gist is: if you want to recharge your body and mind in a warm and relaxed place, with enough Internet to work and play from, affordable accommodation, delicious food, and no rowdy tourist groups around, but instead a bunch of hackers and their friends⦠just show up at our destination sometime during the month of January!

Saylor explains Bitcoin, Proof of Work, and the Defense Against Weaponized AI.
Summary of that topic in WIM314:
"As artificial intelligence becomes more powerful, its greatest threat may not be intelligence itself, but scale. AI systems can generate infinite messages, identities, transactions, and decisions at near-zero marginal cost. In a digital world where actions are cheap and reversible, this creates a profound vulnerability: systems built on trust, reputation, or consensus can be overwhelmed by synthetic activity. Weaponized AI exploits this weakness by flooding networks with misinformation, fake identities, and automated economic attacks.
Michael Saylor argues that Bitcoin offers a unique defense against this problem because it reintroduces scarcity into the digital realm. Bitcoinβs Proof of Work system anchors digital actions to physical reality by requiring real energy, real hardware, and real time. Unlike information, which AI can fabricate effortlessly, energy expenditure cannot be faked. Proof of Work transforms physics into a security mechanism, creating a non-spoofable signal that distinguishes meaningful actions from costless noise.
This physical anchoring enables Bitcoin to function as a universal authentication and settlement layer in an AI-dominated world. A Bitcoin transaction is not merely dataβit is proof that an actor was willing and able to expend irreversible resources. This makes it a powerful filter against automated abuse. While AI can generate endless identities and narratives, it cannot cheaply replicate the economic cost required to participate honestly in a Proof of Work network.
Saylor further contends that economic cost is the most effective deterrent against large-scale AI abuse. Weaponized AI thrives in environments where attacks are free and consequences are minimal. Proof of Work changes this dynamic by imposing unavoidable costs on every action. Attacks are not eliminated, but they are priced according to the laws of thermodynamics. As a result, malicious behavior becomes economically constrained rather than infinitely scalable.
In contrast, trust-based or stake-based systems remain vulnerable to AI manipulation. Artificial intelligence excels at simulating consensus, influencing perception, and exploiting governance mechanisms. Proof of Work resists these attacks precisely because it is indifferent to identity, reputation, or persuasion. It measures only verifiable energy expenditure, making it one of the few systems that scales security alongside computational power.
In this sense, Bitcoin functions as a digital immune system. As intelligence becomes cheap and abundant, truth and identity become increasingly fragile. By tying digital actions to physical cost, Proof of Work provides an objective foundation for coordination, security, and trust. In a future shaped by weaponized AI, Bitcoinβs greatest contribution may not be financial innovation, but the preservation of integrity in the digital world."

A couple of thoughts on Venezuela π»πͺ, in no particular order and for no specific reason.
- Well-prepared and rehearsed multi-agency assault.
- Signal to Russia and China in the form of a βmilitary show of force and intelligence operation.β
- Bukele likely played his part by exchanging roughly 250 Tren de Aragua cartel members for 10 imprisoned US citizens, removing potential US hostage blackmail leverage. This dates back to July 2025 as preparatory steps for successful execution.
- Maduro was offered an exit (and safe haven) but acted cocky, with no contingency plan. He also overestimated the capabilities of Russian and Chinese military defense systems βsoldβ to Venezuela compared to available US capabilities.
- Maduro underestimated intelligence operators and assets in the country + probable leaks in his closest circles.
- The Cuban regime is in big trouble. Its only real ally was Venezuela, which supplied βfreeβ oil and resources in exchange for medical and military personnel stationed there. Now the Cuban regime will face hard times without regional support, and its other allies are distant and wonβt make the difference.
- Maduroβs removal from Venezuela will also affect Russia, as it will lose the ability to sell βlaunderedβ Russian oil through this proxy. Russia still sells oil through other proxies but Venezuela was significant.
