After a painting by Fernand Pelez, a Spanish-born artist living in Paris known for painting beggars and the homeless, circus performers, and the poor. Genre paintings like this became popular in the 19th century, alongside more traditional formal classical portraits and hunting or battle scenes. This 1896 engraving shows the entrance to Batalha Monastery The portrayal of light and shadow, foreground and depth, is very strong here. There are clear Moorish influences, i’d say, being no expert in such things.
