All he needed to do was alter the statement a little bit.
Basically as soon as I disagreed, HODL and his merry band of idiot followers chose to interpret my position as being the negation of what I stated above about marriage, children, and family.
Once the idiots misinterpreted the basis of the dispute, it quickly devolved into a shitshow.

My guess is that Nostr has a high population of (mostly former) X users. They're not used to having full conversations, and prefer to jump to conclusions and react before getting any clarification or understanding.
Maybe after enough years on Nostr, they'll become human again. Until then, it's best to mute, or ignore, people that prefer bashing someone before being informed.
