The main mistake Europeans made is that you actually started believing your own lies when you tried to give Ukrainians the most positive PR possible. In reality, Ukrainians and Russians are indistinguishable β€” both are nations of fuck-ups / slackers / irresponsible people, and whatever a Russian fails at, a Ukrainian fails at in exactly the same way. The sole difference between the two is that Ukrainians have retained, since Soviet days, the conviction that somebody owes them something (regardless of who or why), whereas Russians gave up on relying on anyone long ago and understand that no one will help them (yet they continue to complain endlessly that they’ve been "deceived", though the only people who actually deceived them were themselves).
Yeah, true, but the thing is that the Ukrainians and the Russians were both sort of right. Nobody arrived to help the Russians (just take advantage of their current plight), but the Ukrainians have gotten America and most of Europe to back them up, for years and years. And they've impressed us all, by holding out so long, and scaling up so fast. They're producing things their NATO partners can't make and they're the only ones who have proven that any of their stuff actually does what they say. Ukraine also taught them how to defeat Russian anti-aircraft systems. That played into Israel and USA getting around them in Iran and Venezuela, respectively.
