@Ross Ulbricht just got a 300 bitcoin donation. Many people speculating it was a self donation with a stash of bitcoin left over from the Silk Road days.
It doesn’t bother me if it was, but from an optics perspective he should definitely come out with a post that’s like wow, thank you whoever did this I’m overwhelmed with gratitude etc… if you’re silent about a 30 million dollar donation it definitely looks like a self donation.
Just my two sats.

Eh, it's a bit tricky with these things. I remember back in 2017 when Roger Ver made fun of Antonopoulos for not having much Bitcoin and the community donated a bunch of Bitcoin to Andreas, and he got 100+ BTC from a single donor. He wrote a long post about securing those coins and thanked people generally, but he didn't thank the whale donor.
Obviously a different case here, but as a recipient, you want to be careful not to put too much attention to your donor who might want to stay anonymous.
I remember that as well and it’s certainly not inconceivable that a whale would donate Ross 300 coin, but with people speculating it might be a good idea to at least do a broad thank you post
Yea, I'm guessing he will soon. The last thing he wants is more government scrutiny.
Exactly
That’s a hefty donation and big ass whale if that’s the case.
yo thanks for scraping together the spare change from under your yacht cushions!
Perfect timing for self donation old goods after btc conference before hype ends
I have mixed feeling on this. Transparency is important, but it’s also important to remember that not only did the government steal and sell the bitcoin they seized from Silk Road, but federal agents decided to do crimes on their own and steal some for themselves. We always expected that someone would eventually come around with a donation for Ross, and it’s easy to imagine why that someone wouldn’t want to be identified, whether it’s actually him or not.
“Do Crimes” would make a great album title
Who cares where it came from
@npub1yrf6...kaz3 the “would you go to jail for 10 years for 300 Bitcoin?” Posts from OPs are coming, I can sense it 😂
Yall are just taking these zaps too damn far now!
21 sats is around 2 cents now so you can literally zap people your two cents
He might have thabked but now you made it weird 😉.
He can buy so many interesting shitcoins with that
Definetely! 😅
If it was a self donation, someone needs to remind him that if you have 300 bitcoin that people don't already know you have, don't go moving it into an address that they know is yours. I'd HOPE he's learned a thing or two about the importance about privacy on the Internet after that whole post as altoid on Bitcointalk...
totally agree
big facts
if someone sent me a 300 bitcoin donation nobody would ever hear from me again lol
he doesn’t owe anyone anything.
i hope he turns into a ghost that periodically appears in unexpected places.
Which address should I send to then? 🤪

Ooops. I meant "sats". Stupid wallet always switches back to BTC.
Generous donation, Leo.
No takebacks.
Ross rn

Dude has been in prison over a decade and is probably still coming to terms with that experience. Id give the guy a break on the optics bullshit.
You just don’t understand what I’m saying. Which is fine. It doesn’t really matter if you do or not.
I think I do. I just don't think he owes anyone an explanation after what he's been through, self donation or not.
This is about potential legal ramifications not about people’s opinions s
So… not about optics like you said, but legal ramifications?
Optics raise suspicion which can lead to legal ramifications the government only prosecutes selectively
My first thought was, “ooh that was generous.”
My second thought was, “ooh that was smart.”
Very interesting…
Gifts from Anonymous Individuals 🇺🇸
“If you receive a gift from an anonymous individual, it is typically not taxable to you. The donor may be subject to gift tax if the amount exceeds certain thresholds. As of 2025, the annual exclusion allows individuals to give up to $19,000 per recipient per year without incurring gift tax. Gifts exceeding this limit may count against the donor’s lifetime exemption of $13.99 million, and the donor is required to file IRS Form 709 to report such gifts.”

Aren't most of his wallets fairly doxxed or otherwise easy to trace? What's the tx ID of the donation?
I really hope, five years from now, we’re not all saying “Yeah so it turned out he was a reckless guy who couldn’t stop touching hot stoves.”
Ross flirting with prison again 😅
They are clearly ₿ that he managed to save from the clutches of the state when he was arrested. Bravo he who eluded the authorities with part of his proceeds
