how do you manage your hardware harem ?
i get a new desktop every 6-7 years or so, a new laptop every 4-5 years or so and a new phone every 3-4 years or so
i keep all my desktops for as long as they work, but for phones and laptops i keep only the latest one and give the old ones to my parents
posting this now because i just ordered a new GPU for my 8 year old desktop, which is the oldest of the three computers i use. the GPU is a refurbished RTX 3070 so it is itself 4 years old, but that is half the age of GTX 1060 that it will replace. it made no sense to get anything better as i already have RTX 4080 in two other computers ( a real one in a desktop and a mobile in a laptop ). but more importantly the old mobo doesn't have PCIE 5.0 anyway so i figured to save some money and get GPU that is on a PCIE standard closer to that of the mobo it's going into.
the GTX 1060 was struggling pretty bad with just regular everyday stuff like YouTube ( it's driving a 4K HDR screen ) but i won't throw it out ! i will move it to an even older PC that i haven't used in years but is still in working condition ! that old PC is hooked up to a 1080p screen and GTX 1060 should do better there.
