I've been saying the same thing! Had these devs understood what it meant to be a true Samurai, not LARPing as warriors for freedom, they would NEVER "plea" for mercy. Rather than xompromise their honor by pleading to a victimless crime they didn't even commit they would've fell own their own sword. Death before dishonor is part of the Way of the Samurai. Family or not, they should've recognized that death was a possible, even likely, outcome for having built tools that undermine the Nanny State's power. A real Samurai, not a LARP, would commit seppuku before pleading before the crown!

If I chose to "fight" and ended up in jail as a result, I would have shown them that no matter what, all you are in life is your beliefs and principles and that that is worth fighting and defending even to the death. That might be enough to set them up to be strong humans that are difficult to govern as well as potentially inspiring them to take on and continue the onerous task of fighting until WE WIN! That being said, history is littered with the bodies of martyrs that died for causes that required only 1% of the blood spilled but this seems to be the way the universe demands it. It's a tough choice but in the end, true heroes, true martyrs are very rare and even more rare in 21st century society. With all due respect, so-called sovereign citizens who play these tricks in court are just asking for trouble. While I believe in pointing out the failures and wrongdoings of the state, it's better to ignore their crapola by keeping shit to yourself and a small community, I think. There are entire divisions in major police departments devoted to tracking and harassing these folks who identify as "sovereign," and it's always going to be the law's word against theirs. Whether or not we are right as a matter of principle, does not matter to the state and her flying monkeys. I don't have experience in courtroom antics such as this, but I do prefer to live by the rule of "never ask permission, and apologize later".
