Friends, at a time when science is under attack and people are economically hurting, the scientific community should work to make access easier not harder. @Assn for Computing Machinery, Association for Computing Machinery, is doing the complete opposite by introducing paywalls that didn't exist. Features that were previously free and open to the public are now "Premium Access" features. If you are opposed to this measure, join me in signing this petition asking the ACM to stop. https://www.ipetitions.com/petition/restore-fully-free-and-open-access
RE: Below is an excerpt from what I wrote before. Just think about where these monsters are sending these poor young people to. "Eritrea boasts the longest detained journalist in the world, and with over 360 detention facilities (many underground) in a country of 45 kmi², the regime has disappeared all dissidents (even imprisoning them in shipping containers in temperatures that induce one’s skin to be stuck to the walls), with no due process or trial. "The ads, from a company calling itself Replacement AI, feature dark, dystopian taglines." The ads, from a company calling itself Replacement AI, feature dark, dystopian taglines. One reads: “AI does your daughter’s homework. Reads her bedtime stories. Romances her. Deepfakes her. Don’t worry. It’s totally legal.” Visitors to the Replacement AI website are greeted with a banner declaring, “Humans are no longer necessary.” ‘Stupid. Smelly. Squishy.’ https://www.kron4.com/news/bay-area/if-this-is-a-joke-the-punchline-is-on-humanity-replacement-ai-blurs-line-between-parody-and-tech-reality/
I see that Fernando Pereira is donating to OpenReview (with a public announcement) because he apparently cares about "open science" or "open research" or some such. That's news to me. He is the Google VP who wrote a condescending, bizarre, what was meant to be anonymous, "privileged and confidential" letter which was then sent to the HR department, instructing me and my coauthors to retract our Stochastic Parrots paper.
