The old post office in Preston, near Weymouth, Dorset, England. Built in 1715 I believe (but Historic England wants it to be 1747). Wheat thatch roof on a two story two feet thick rubble stone body. It was probably far more charming back in the 1970s when it was listed. I wonder when it stopped being a post office? It probably still has a very unusual or rather unique domed bread oven inside.

Good (Japanese) review of a great book of that lists serious child care accidents and how to prevent them. Doesn't matter how careful or clever you think you are. When accidents happen it is too late. Especially useful for young/new parents.
If you are one of dozens of millions of people planning to visit Japan in 2026, you will most likely at least consider buying some nihonshu or sake to take home or gift as a souvenir. Japanese alcohol can be an acquired taste so even if you get a small bottle chances are you won't finish it in on sitting. Opened sake starts going bad but will keep far far longer (months!) if you take basic hygiene precautions when handling the cap or cork or bottle top. Never ever touch the inside of the cork with your bare hands or let it rest on a table. Always wipe it down with a clean cloth or rinse it under water or even apply disinfectant to it before replacing. Nothing kills sake like bacteria. You can buy special openers to allow you to handle the corks safely, but it isn't necessary. Or you can just get enough interested friends together to finish the whole bottle in one go. As intended.

It is influenza season. In children, abnormal behavior and delirium is a fairly common occurrence during and directly after illness. Every year there are cases of fatal accidents which is why doctors recommend to never let children with influenza sleep or stay alone, and that windows and doors and balconies are carefully locked. If possible precautions should be taken to nurse sick children on the ground floor of houses and with temporary childproof locks. Parents should sleep in the same room but with head positioning as far away as possible and wear masks (not the child). Ventilation should be rapid and frequent but windows should only be opened while the child is carefully watched. Delirium can be sudden and even small children can move fast. Even a single accident is too tragic to be contemplated. Parents beware.

Currently making amazake in my kitchen, my cupboard drawer has a batch of miso going, on the counter the yoghurt is nearly done and on the balcony in the shade are a couple of bottles of wild vinegar. Fermenting food is the way to go. Let enzymes, microbes and mold do the work.

Happiness is a choice, I tell myself, and that usually works. But when something disturbs my peace, nothing brings it back as well and as quickly as walking. Slightly annoyed? Around 1 block. Seriously irked? Around 2 blocks. Angry? Around 3-4 blocks. Anger is rare for me now.

Music is the ultimate diplomatic tool. I have a good feeling for the future of Korea and Japan. Beware though, as foreign actors will do their best to sow division.
