are evangelicals… that? the anabaptists were getting killed all over europe the second they surfaced for doing adult baptisms and not baptizing infants (like evangelicals now). if they had time then to develop fully, what conclusions would they have “mainstreamed”? fascinating.
i have occasionally enjoyed the term “non-hellenic” christianity for forms of christianity that attempt to shuck this greek influence (if such a thing is possible) and thus end up being kind of fringe, or very different from what we generally call christianity.
its possible that the general thrust of many american christian views havent been fully “squeezed” to bring all premises to their logical conclusions. its possible questions like: what lens are we viewing this text through? (very modern) becoming mainstream will accelerate this.
however, this question is rarely posed this way. people or groups will intuitively signal or align with one side of it but most people aren’t thinking about things in these terms. what would an archetypal evangelical christian say? theyre generally outside of history, in a way.
that’s what the great apostasy is. is greek philosophy an epic forerunner to christianity and a great foundation or is its mixture with christianity a huge problem? giving the second answer to this question puts you outside the mainstream of christian history (example: mormonism)
gonna go on about this a bit because this is a huge part of my whole thing: in the first minute here, he describes, point blank, the great apostasy. that early christian writers were so taken with greek philosophy that they mistakenly intermingled its concepts into christianity.
