nvidia releasing open source models makes a ton of sense.
they commoditize models so more people can self host LLMs, and by doing so increase the market of people who demand better chips
same economic reason google invests money into open sourcing android and chrome. more people using web and mobile brings more demand for google services.
the list goes on and on...
companies invest heavily in open source when it helps them commoditize their partners in the value chain, and accrue value back to themselves.
