Mastodon is secretly sponsored by a cartel of cat food and cat toys manufacturers. Its main purpose is to get you to want a cat in your household so they can sell you more of their stuff. And it is working quite well, as far as I can see.
And that's why Mastodon/ActivityPub will always beat Bluesky and other services. Smart stuff. Really smart stuff ;)

After almost 9 months of observation, here's a "funny" correlation. Every time I post (and you good people like/boost) my blog post on "residential proxies" that really are just botnets for hire, some other folks decide to turn exactly these botnets on my mail server for a few days. So please, keep linking/boosting to make sure I can catch and block them all ;) The attached screenshots are around 25% from the list for today after I linked to my post in a reply yesterday.

Botnet Part 2: The Web is Broken
I guess you have all heard about the growing problem of AI companies trying to aggressively collect whatever data they can get their hands on to tr...

Years ago I got one of the first Alexa devices and I was really looking forward to install it. When it arrived and I powered it on for the first time, its LEDs blinking, I felt a panic creeping up in me. It was the moment I understood that centralised collection of such amounts of private data is unacceptable and will ultimately break democracy and free societies. That was the moment I decided to go decentralised. That Alexa device is still here, visible but unconnected. To remind me every day.
Continuing my exploration of using garage S3 storage in my homelab [1], I managed to do a lot of things today. I can now use the certbot dns01 challenge on my own step-ca based Certificate Authority to generate wildcard certificates for my homelab and reconfigured nginx to reverse proxy web pages, straight from S3 buckets as https://<BucketName>.web.homelab.jhw. Yay! This will be explained in Part 3.

LOL. I went through all the hassle of setting up #immich only to find out it can't even rotate uploaded pictures using the web UI, as far as I can see?
Did you know that science has progressed to the point that you can get your blood checked for antibodies against COVID19 and if those antibodies are coming from vaccination or infection? I do this check once a year. And the results are in. Still vaccination only. My regimen of #WearAMask and avoiding risky situations seems to work. Next year I'll order the test again. In Germany it costs around €50-75, depending on the lab. Ask your doctor to get it done. That's how I did it.
Defending #Greenland in case of military aggression from the USA is often reduced to the complexities of Art. 5 NATO. But there is a similar rule for EU member states, that will be automatically triggered without NATO but demands the same commitments as given to NATO for EU members that are also NATO members.

I really hope that [@Mer__edith](
) comes to #FOSDEM and announces that #Signal will move at least parts of their server infrastructure to Europe and other regions, using hosting companies that are not connected to the US in order to mitigate the risk of a Trump order to shut their AWS account(s) down.
