U.S. President Donald Trump warned that if Iran resumes killing people as it has in the past, the United States would respond with severe force.
According to an intelligence report seen by The Times, Iranian Supreme-Leader Ali Khamenei plans to flee Tehran with a close circle of up to twenty aides and family, if military and security forces called on to quell the ongoing civil unrest begin deserting, defecting, or failing to follow orders, particularly members of Khamenei’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC). The plan is reportedly based on the escape in 2024 of his close ally, Syrian Dictator Bashar al-Assad, who fled Damascus in December as rebel forces approached the capital city from all direction, boarding a plane to join his family in Moscow. Khamenei, in planning his escape, would “gather assets, properties abroad and cash to facilitate their safe passage,” with them fleeing to Moscow. image
Footage from Saturday appears to show Venezuelan forces firing a MANPADS at a helicopter during Operation Absolute Resolve.
Video footage shows a total of seven MH-60M Black Hawks and five MH-47G Chinooks from the U.S. Army’s 160th Special Operations Aviation Regiment (SOAR) flying at low altitude over Caracas during Saturday morning’s operation to capture President Nicolás Maduro.
Venezuelan Defense Minister Vladimir Padrino López: “If this can happen to Venezuela today, it can happen to any country tomorrow. This represents a threat to the global order.”
Speaking earlier today on NBC’s Meet the Press about the operation to capture Nicolás Maduro, Secretary of State Marco Rubio addressed questions about future U.S. policy in Latin America. When asked by Kristen Welker whether the Cuban government could be the Trump administration’s next target, Rubio said the Cuban government is “a huge problem” and added that it is “in a lot of trouble.” While declining to outline specific next steps or policies, Rubio emphasized that it is no secret the administration strongly opposes the Cuban regime.
Rubio: The so-called “experts” are clowns. Venezuela bears no resemblance to Libya, Iraq, Afghanistan, or the Middle East—aside from Iranian operatives operating there and plotting against the United States. These are Western countries, and people need to stop making apples-to-oranges comparisons.
In a phone interview with The Atlantic this morning, President Donald J. Trump issued a warning to Venezuela’s interim president, Delcy Rodríguez, saying that “if she doesn’t do what’s right, she’s going to pay a very big price—probably bigger than Maduro.” He added that he would not tolerate what he called Rodríguez’s “defiant rejection” of U.S. military intervention. During the same interview, Trump suggested that Venezuela may not be the last target of American intervention, nor would U.S. actions necessarily be limited to Latin America. He pointed to Greenland, stating, “We do need Greenland, absolutely,” and described the Danish territory—part of a close U.S. ally and NATO member—as being “surrounded by Russian and Chinese ships.” image
