Hah. The reason my new MacBook was rebooting during sleep appears to be that the keyboard cover I put on it only has half-height covers in the top row, so the cutout for the power button wasn't big enough. The half-key cover there was pressing the power button during sleep. Guess those affordances are real real thin. I fixed it by cutting off the offending key cover. Seems fine now.
