The Prohibition on Seeking & Striving for Authority
On authority of Abd ar-Rahman bin Samurah (ra), the Prophet (ﷺ) said:
"Oh, Abd ar-Rahman bin Samurah! Do not ask for authority. For truly, if you are granted it from asking, it will be entrusted to you. And if you are granted it without asking, you will be helped with it."
In explanation of this Hadith for the purposes of Usul and Fiqh, Shaykh Abd ar-Rahman bin Qasim said:
"[The term] "Authority" is general for all authority [stemming] from the greater Imaamah [Khilaafah], and whatever is below it in terms of each authority; and from [that authority] is the judiciary..."
"So, whoever seeks authority and is granted it will be abandoned [by Allah ﷻ] to it, because of his wanting it. Thus, it is disliked to enter into the judiciary and similar to it out of wanting or asking for it because whoever wishes for it will not be helped to achieve justice from it when entrusted."
"It is feared for such a person, being deprived of [Divine] Aid, that he gets involved in something he enters into, thus, losing his Dunya and his Akhirah..."
Al-'Ihkaam, 4/493
