I love old-school liner notes because of the stories they tell about the music. Currently spinning a piece by Heitor Villa-Lobos, a true master. His composition O Trenzinho do Caipira from Bachianas Brasileiras No. 2 was inspired by a train ride he took in 1931 transporting berry pickers and farm laborers between villages in Brazil. In the arrangement, you can hear the train squeak, chug, and bump along. An incredible piece of music, and it’s a shame how many listeners today may never fully appreciate this Brazilian giant.

Currently spinning Don Henley’s Building the Perfect Beast. Back in the day, “All She Wants to Do Is Dance” felt like a fun pop song about a party girl. Listening now, it’s much more serious. Lines like “Molotov cocktails on the local TV news” and “You know she believes in nothing but her own selfish ways” land as a cynical take on power and politics when this album came out in 1984. Probably one reason Don Henley’s music has lasted is that so much of it still applies today.

When I heard about Fiona Apple’s Let Her Go Home project, I was immediately intrigued. According to the project, on any given day roughly 190,600 women and girls are incarcerated in the United States, with over 60,000 women detained pretrial, presumed innocent, and jailed simply because they cannot afford bail. Fiona is raising awareness of this reality and released her first new music in about five years with the single “Pretrial (Let Her Go Home),” with seven dollars from every purchase going toward supporting women, families, and communities impacted by pretrial incarceration. Sure, a limited vinyl copy or a signed photo card would be cool, but this is really about supporting the cause. Good on Fiona. I always knew there was a reason I connected so deeply with her music.

Currently spinning Krokus’ The Blitz. The best part of digging through the dollar bin at an antique shop is finding a band you’ve never heard of and learning something new. Krokus is a Swiss rock band that built a following in the early 80s. This album was critically panned, but honestly, it isn’t that bad. They definitely give off an AC/DC-lite vibe in places. Revolutionary? No. Fun? There are some fun cuts on here.
