This crisis won’t be resolved until we stop the political polarization associated with housing men in women’s prisons. These policies are being used by predatory men, and a large percentage of these men are registered sex offenders and have long histories of violence against women. One person’s safety CANNOT come at the cost of another’s. There are ways to ensure the whole incarcerated community is treated with respect, agency and dignity. Our lawmakers are just going to have to value human lives over money.
