Get off X/Twitter now! It's not strategic to try to hold territory on a platform where the algorithms are designed to systematically center authoritarian narratives and cryptocurrency schemes. At this point, the participation of those who are not in favor of authoritarianism only serves to preserve the illusion that X/Twitter is a public square, when in fact it is a means of social control. With Elon Musk playing a role in the incoming Trump administration, it is a safe bet that X/Twitter will be providing intelligence directly to federal agencies for the purposes of monitoring and attacking dissent. Musk is already looting everything on the platform for his AI ventures. Millions are joining Bluesky, but Mastodon is a more decentralized and autonomous option. Set up Signal loops. Get in the habit of meeting regularly in person. Spread this far and wide! image
We've also prepared a zine version of "The Eye of Every Storm," in which a local anarchist involved in longstanding disaster response efforts in Appalachia recounts the lessons that they have learned in the course of responding to Hurricane Helene and offers advice about how to prepare for the disasters to come. Again, please print and distribute them! image
A few months ago, the conservative party came to power in Valencia, Spain with the support of the far right. One of their first acts was to eliminate climate emergency services. At the end of October, flooding exacerbated by climate change killed over 200 people in the region. Massive numbers of people mobilized horizontally to respond to the flooding through mutual aid. Despite their ties to the conservative government, far-right groups have tried to hijack popular anger over the state's failures. This is the classic strategy of fascists and demagogues: create a crisis, then try to capitalize on it. We salute the anarchists and anti-fascists in Valencia organizing against the flood, the government, and the far right. The sign in the attached images reads "We clear out politicians like we clear our mud"; the logo reads "We clear out fascism like we clear out mud." The photograph shows Valencia City Hall smeared with mud and graffiti calling the right-wing mayor a murderer. Capitalism is the disaster! 🏴
This is a good time to make sure that everyone in your broader community is using Signal and knows how to anonymize their identity on it. This flier offers QR codes to make it easy. You can print out this design here: 📄.pdf You could use the blank space on the flier to add a third QR code directing people to a local announcements-only Signal thread to stay abreast of developments. You can learn how to set one up here: image
How to Organize an Assembly Preparing to Respond in an Era of Disasters and Despotism There are times when people who have counted on politicians and specialists to solve their problems suddenly realize that their only hope is to make contact with others like themselves and work together. But how do we connect with them—or at least connect them with each other? One answer is to host an open assembly. Here, we offer a brief guide, along with some sample discussion questions you could use to talk through how to prepare for the second Donald Trump administration. image
The fact that an aspiring autocrat has won an election does not oblige us to submit to him. No one should excuse being complicit in tyranny on the grounds that other people voted for it. People will scribble in a box for any number of reasons—misinformation, advertising, bigotry, fantasies of power—regardless of whether it is actually in their best interests. But what we do every day determines what kind of society we live in. image
In the United States, we have two months to prepare to confront fascism on a scale we have not experienced in our lifetimes. Now—right now—is the time to call for public assemblies to connect people who are disillusioned with the electoral process and prepare the ground for grassroots organizing and resistance. We can help to equip you with posters, stickers, and reading material, including how-to guides and introductory literature, with which to make the case to your community. Get started now while there is still time.
History Repeats Itself: First as Farce, Then as Tragedy Donald Trump has won the 2024 election. That means that we will have to fight many of the battles of 2017-2020 all over again. First, in order to understand what we’re up against, let’s look at how we got here. In many ways, the Democrats are responsible for Donald Trump’s return to power. image
While we are sharing posters on the theme of capitalism and death, we should include "Capitalism Is a Death Cult," from 2020. "Nothing matters to the market but profit. Forests only have value as timber or toilet paper; animals only have value as hot dogs or hamburgers. The precious, unrepeatable moments of our lives only have value as labor hours determined by the imperatives of commerce... "Some things are worth risking our lives for. Perpetuating capitalism is not one of them. If we have to risk our lives, let’s risk them for something worthwhile, like creating a world in which no one has to risk death for a paycheck." image
