A general strike is called for January 23 in response to the campaign of kidnapping and murder that ICE is carrying out in the Twin Cities. This is a powerful step forward for resistance. But in the 21st century, a general strike must assume new forms to succeed. To understand the ways that the economy has shifted and how our strike tactics must also shift, we compare the last two general strikes that took place in the US—both of which, conveniently, occurred in Oakland, California—in 1946 and 2011:

What would a general strike look like today? We explore the last two general strikes to take place in the US—both in Oakland, in 1946 and 2011.

When industrial workers are no longer the backbone of the economy, a general strike must begin outside the workplace as well as within it. That means interrupting the economy "from outside" via blockading and similar tactics. The blockade of the Port of Oakland in 2011 offers an example of this.

On January 10, participants in a march in Oakland smashed 47 windows at the federal building and covered it with spray paint as a way to identify it as a base of local ICE operations. While ICE is focused on the Twin Cities, actions elsewhere spread their attention thin and inspire resistance.

Following the vandalism of at least 11 government vehicles or rentals driven by federal mercenaries at a hotel in Eagan, Minnesota last night, it's safe to say—you don't want to stay at a hotel that hosts ICE, or even park your vehicle there. You don't want to host them at your hotel, either.

Don't believe that every word out of the mouths of the federal mercenaries is a lie? Here is Border Patrol “Commander at Large” Gregory Bovino, dressed as an officer, of the German Gestapo, shamelessly declaring that ICE is "ethical and moral" and even "peaceful" days after his men senselessly murdered a soccer mom, shot another person in the leg, and targeted thousands of people with tear gas and flash-bang grenades. Likewise, after ICE pointlessly tear-gassed a vehicle containing four small children and a 6-month-old baby, nearly killing the baby, DHS Assistant Secretary Tricia McLaughlin blatantly lied, claiming "DHS law enforcement NEVER targeted this family or their innocent children."

Whatever they say, it is a lie. Never believe a word. They do violence to the truth as eagerly as they do violence to human beings. They represent the most despicable aspects of all humanity. They will murder, kidnap, brutalize, and terrorize as long as they are permitted to.

After ICE agents shot people in Minneapolis tonight, a crowd faced them down and eventually chased them away, despite federal mercenaries and police shooting a tremendous amount of tear gas. ICE agents abandoned their vehicles in the area, containing IDs, paperwork, license plates, gear, and operational plans. Demonstrators apparently retrieved these "challenge coins" that ICE mercenaries receive when they kidnap people. This "coin" is decorated with a skull wearing a crown. ICE mercenaries serve king death. They are evil incarnate.

By concentrating their forces on the Twin Cities, ICE is attempting to break the spirit of the whole country, erase the legacy of the George Floyd uprising, and set a precedent that they can repeat everywhere. But if ICE can converge, so can everyone else. All out to the Twin Cities to resist them. Thousands of people across the Twin Cities are mobilizing against ICE. Federal mercenaries roam the city attacking people at random—but everywhere they go, they meet fierce resistance. What happens in the Twin Cities will determine what happens to us all. Don't surrender to fascism.
