Lover of Atari, BBSes and retro tech. I'm the amateur historian behind the "Break Into Chat" wiki and blog. In my professional life, I'm a journalist at the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. Break Into Chat: https://breakintochat.com/blog/ Guardian of Forever BBS: https://guardian.synchro.net
Sad news: "Dry Bones" cartoonist Yaakov Kirschen has died. https://www.jns.org/dry-bones-cartoonist-yaakov-kirschen-dies-at-87/ I first encountered Kirschen through his "Mom and Me" and "Murray and Me" graphical chatbot programs (received from my uncle Jim when he handed down his Atari ST to us in the late 1980s). Kirschen's work on "Mom" and "Murray" was profiled in-depth by the NYT, LAT, and others. (1/x) #atarist #atari #retrocomputing #kirschen #drybones #jewish #vintagecomputing #obituaries image
If you're the person who just won the eBay auction for seven "1985 Antic Software Atari ST Game Disks" for $107.50, please get in touch. I want to make sure the monochrome version of "Mom and Me" gets archived. #atarist #atari #digipres #kirschen #antic #ebay #archive image
In recent weeks I've been playing "DDST," a fun adventure game for Atari ST BBSes that I had never tried before. I *love* that it lets you save basically whenever you want. Makes it possible to avoid losing progress while exploring dungeons crowded with monsters and traps. My wife took a quick peek while I was in a dungeon and asked if it was a QR code. Nope ... just some VT52 text art! #atari #atarist #bbs #games #gamedev #vt52 #textmode
