Mastodon is secretly sponsored by a cartel of cat food and cat toys manufacturers. Its main purpose is to get you to want a cat in your household so they can sell you more of their stuff. And it is working quite well, as far as I can see. And that's why Mastodon/ActivityPub will always beat Bluesky and other services. Smart stuff. Really smart stuff ;) #SarcasmButOnlyHalf #caturday
After almost 9 months of observation, here's a "funny" correlation. Every time I post (and you good people like/boost) my blog post on "residential proxies" that really are just botnets for hire, some other folks decide to turn exactly these botnets on my mail server for a few days. So please, keep linking/boosting to make sure I can catch and block them all ;) The attached screenshots are around 25% from the list for today after I linked to my post in a reply yesterday.
Years ago I got one of the first Alexa devices and I was really looking forward to install it. When it arrived and I powered it on for the first time, its LEDs blinking, I felt a panic creeping up in me. It was the moment I understood that centralised collection of such amounts of private data is unacceptable and will ultimately break democracy and free societies. That was the moment I decided to go decentralised. That Alexa device is still here, visible but unconnected. To remind me every day.
Continuing my exploration of using garage S3 storage in my homelab [1], I managed to do a lot of things today. I can now use the certbot dns01 challenge on my own step-ca based Certificate Authority to generate wildcard certificates for my homelab and reconfigured nginx to reverse proxy web pages, straight from S3 buckets as https://<BucketName>.web.homelab.jhw. Yay! This will be explained in Part 3. [1] #Garage #S3 #SelfHost #SysAdminLife @npub1w2vt...zxys
