an artist named karli frigge made these marbled papers between 1974 and 1998 and i may or may not have been using them as phone backgrounds for years https://hell.twtr.plus/media/abff6e232d7d585bf24f0a3d0217f0f8c6128bfa1ba20abdc404d84f0492246b.file https://hell.twtr.plus/media/daee3816132d4e7a1a841a1f9fb2ee653d76072fc6c0afe60aae82751af5dc07.file https://hell.twtr.plus/media/9ae52490f31dc03b35befb3638b16cb17d7816d67f58afd3176a699bb53b900a.file https://hell.twtr.plus/media/8f8fe5187409ae0588751cdc59590e1290d34fc629caa6a2114e66605e28a80f.file
something slightly eldritch about women transitioning into holiday baking mode. some force enters them. “the baking” is clearly an entity. another gathering: who called for it? “the baking”. it summons the people, moving through the women. it has called them for its own purposes.
perhaps many modern problems can be reduced to: wanting to be tethered to something or someone, while also taking issue with what a tether actually does.
“tether” is really a perfect word because to be tethered to someone is positive - you’re paired up, linked together; but a tether also, by its nature, restrains and limits you: if it didn’t, it wouldn’t be a tether.
look around: christmas now starts in november. people have trees up. i suspect the main factors are: - thanksgiving is about pilgrims and colonial america, many are antithetical or alien to this - covid jarring people out of rhythm - secular christmas is just “winter holiday”
perhaps its because i can usually clock some few week period here where i am drawing the least - wrapping up projects, prepping for the holidays. there is something very “pure imagination” about these. imagine making them with no conception of the last century of “fantasy” art: https://hell.twtr.plus/media/453fdfb9d44266ef938364d26848e4d5e90204678d55d21ae17c6692e270101b.file https://hell.twtr.plus/media/86273112e65289c420198b3ab9634f03bf38711c56270fd2551c79fd93b9ace8.file
every year around this time the bizarre fantasy creatures of the late 1800s / early 1900s re-enter my mind. i believe these are all from max frey: https://hell.twtr.plus/media/29061832f8aaba66484eddd10dcc5709c017525f0e3fc74947b33fa1e0f45094.file https://hell.twtr.plus/media/08fd3155fdd43f146b62127e038fe4c24f4486cd628d75e4d3027c26eb0a685e.file https://hell.twtr.plus/media/2c41259480497c0f1fa50b79e9c0246df477926abd66257a51047d3a8c3bc297.file https://hell.twtr.plus/media/d85d2f643c6445f55bc7a6f93da4b28ac5d40bbae23d8f8b2bf792f984f05ef5.file https://hell.twtr.plus/media/ad9372f7a8ecaf2e03b6aa195029654fccf2837812e93f9606e4dfe23b790d5f.file
