"People vastly underestimate the importance of general-purpose computing, and can’t fathom how much worse things can get when it’s gone. Imagine all the (real) economic benefits since the invention of the transistor being directed by a command economy. Liberties we take for granted on already flawed and compromised systems could be diminished entirely. A non-trivial part of this is that one could argue that personal computing has always been artificially cheap. It’s possible that these price hikes better represent a ‘fair’ value of these machines." from longer post by @Libre Solutions Network #PC #cypherpunk #cyberspace
Based on this situation, what backup solution would you recommend to protect data on Windows computers used by small businesses (no IT department) ? OneDrive is not backup, if the data is only stored on OneDrive. Microsoft's default policy defies the common sense recommendation to have data stored in more than one place. Bonus points for Open Source recommendations. #backup #Windows #OneDrive #Windows View quoted note →
Recently, I have had several customers that needed data recovery a major problem with Windows (broken hardware, unboot-able Windows OS, malware infection). Turns out that their data wasn't on their computer at all. I had to help them log into OneDrive to retrieve their data. They had no idea that it was only on Microsoft's storage service and not on their own computer storage. This is also happening to people still using Windows 10. It is not limited to Windows 11 only. #Microsoft #OneDrive View quoted note →
"We are currently in the midst of governments finalizing the negotiations with corporations under what terms they will dictate cyberspace to the public. What is good for the public, never mind what the people actually want is irrelevant to this process. The presumption is that a state’s “digital sovereignty” and corporate “innovation” are vastly more important than the interests of the people. This is why all ‘safety’ reforms for cyberspace will inevitably fail to actually increase safety, they’re not really intended to. In fact, the most likely outcome of these ‘reforms’ is to be highly dangerous to the public in more insidious and difficult to quantify ways." from longer post by @Libre Solutions Network #cyberspace #cyberpunk
