It’s actually not funded by the government (unless you listen to the BBC World Service) but by us the UK taxpayer. That’s not to say there is no government influence (Royal Charter etc).
And that’s also not to say that it isn’t also staffed by average journalists for whom quality research comes second to sensational news that drives traffic for the BBC’s international and commercial arm.
I was true for when I lived in Scotland during the pandemic. The UK government heavily funded the BBC and other media institutions to push covid fear campaign.
I disagree about the funding. The BBCs approximate £3.8bn annual funding is paid entirely by the taxpayer via the license fee (and a little bit from its international commercial arm). What we all saw is simply the MSM (and not just the BBC but all the newspapers and other media outlets etc) blindly relaying; (some call it “reporting”) the government’s arguably misguided narrative for telling us what to do and how to behave. That’s the beauty of propaganda (you don’t really need to pay for it).
