Ham radio comes close. Just call out CQ CQ CQ and some rando will come back, tell you about his equipment, location, weather, ask anout yours and wish you well.
@Bitcoin Nora There is no 'general purpose' conversation any more than there is a 'general purpose' argument. Conversations involve context.
Whatever the purpose of the conversation, t's always useful to find common ground
I prefer to talk about the weather.
But I'm talking to random elderly people at the park rather than sitting at the bar
Weather is probably the most universal actually. Not always exciting but you can't go wrong
