Eritrean asylum seekers in ICE detention are threatening suicide rather than face forced return. That alone should stop every deportation immediately. Any policy that drives people to this level of despair is a humanitarian failure that demands urgent correction. Kidane Zecharias Eritrean human trafficker gets extradited to the Netherlands.Kidane had been an international wanted person since 2021, when he escaped during his trial in Ethiopia. The Netherlands placed him on their most wanted list. On January 1, 2023, he was arrested in Sudan in an international police operation led by the UAE. The UAE had tracked him down in a money laundering investigation. In that same investigation he was later convicted in the UAE.
Only in Eritrea can an intire villagers get arrested. Two weeks ago in Kurana (Logo Anseba) a 16 years old Yafet Yemane was killed by the government militia for cutting a leaf from the tree. The village has 450 population and all of them tried to protest and calling justice for Yafet. The government sent military and arrested the intire villagers including Yafet's parents and syblings who couldn't bury their own son.
Of late, to the delight of the Eritrean people, the Government of Eritrea has released dozens of prisoners. In a press release, the UN’s Office of the High Commissioner for HR said that while this news is encouraging, the Government needs to do more because there “are estimated to be more than 10,000 people in arbitrary detention in Eritrea, among them politicians, journalists, priests and students.” Where did the “10,000” number come and how credible is it?
