In August, representatives of the world’s nations will meet in Geneva, Switzerland, to hopefully finalize a U.N. plastic treaty. But negotiators remain far apart, with an overwhelming number of nations wanting a legally binding treaty that limits plastic production, while a much smaller number want a voluntary agreement focused on waste management. by Tosca Ballerini #news #plastic #pollution #climate #UN #plastictreaty
Scientists recently estimated, for the first time, that the North Atlantic Ocean contains millions of tons of nanoplastics. To measure it, they used a detection method that picks up the chemical markers, or smell, of trace amounts of burned plastic. It's long been speculated that the oceans hold significant amounts of nanoplastics. but no one had managed to quantify them until now. by Shanna Hanbury #news #oceans #nanoplastics #climate #environment #plastic
Rupestrian grasslands form an ecosystem of extremes: covering a mere 0.8% of Brazil’s territory, they are home to 15% of the nation’s flora. The list of threats to this mountaintop ecosystem is long, but mining poses the greatest threat. Conservation units to protect rupestrian grasslands have been set up, while universities are partnering with mining companies to drive restoration projects. by Letícia Klein #news #mining #ecosystems #environment #conservation
A new study finds that Afro-descendant communities in four Amazonian countries are linked to lands with high biodiversity and 29-55% less deforestation compared with protected and unprotected areas. More than 130 million people in Latin America identify as Afro-descendant peoples (ADP), descendants of those forcibly brought to the Americas during the slave trade. by Bobby Bascomb #news #deforestation #communities #Amazon
The Amur leopard lives in isolation in the freezing forests of southeast Russia and northeast China. It’s one of the most endangered of eight leopard subspecies in the world. Today, its population is on the upswing. In the 20th century, poaching for its spotted fur, forest fires and conversion of land for farming caused the wildcat’s population to plummet to roughly 25 individuals in the wild. Today, there are approximately 130 in Russia alone. by Manuel Fonseca #news
Indonesia is the first test case for the Forest Stewardship Council’s new remedy framework, which allows logging firms to regain ethical certification by addressing past environmental and social harms. However, NGOs have found serious flaws in the process, including lack of consent, rushed assessments, and exclusion of many affected Indigenous communities. by Hans Nicholas Jong #News #indigenouscommunities #indigenousrights #environment #logging
Space may be the final frontier, but the modern race to launch rockets and satellites at an unsurpassed rate has generated a large and rapidly growing environmental footprint, the full effects of which are poorly understood. Some experts warn of the Kessler Syndrome, a cascade of colliding and fragmenting space debris that may one day render key Earth orbits unusable. Analysts say proactive national and international regulations are much needed. by Sean Mowbray #News #environment #climate
A new and alarming pattern of destruction is emerging in the rainforest, challenging Brazilian authorities ahead of COP30. After plunging in 2023 and 2024, deforestation in the Amazon surged 92% in May and is up 27% in 2025, half of it in recently burned land — an all-time high.
