The UK city where nearly 1 in 3 children do not speak English as their first language The number of children speaking English as an additional language in the city has risen by a third since 2019. The city is home to more asylum seekers than any other local authority across the nation, housing 3,777 at the end of September. Data from the Scottish Government shows that 28.8% of school pupils in Glasgow do not speak English as their first language. Meanwhile, the number of children speaking English as an additional language (EAL) has increased by a third since 2019, when the figure stood at 22.5%.
