What the heck hat is this? Is he headed off to a civil war reenactment? #monsterdon image
What is the matter, #YouTube? Are bots BAD or something? What are you protecting your precious "community" from? Would it be bad if some out-of-control bots aggressively scraped your content and tried to reuse it without your permission? I can see why you might want to prevent that... image
I have an interview with a candidate in 5 minutes. It's #Halloween, and I'm dressed as a rainbow unicorn. I have no idea if that's a good first impression or a bad first impression. πŸ˜€ I guess we will find out. image
Apparently my work laptop was really low on disk space. The way I found out was installing the #DuckDuckGo browser. I was like "oh, they have a browser? I'll have a look." Suddenly my laptop starts moaning about low disk space. What the hell, DuckDuckGo? This is a treemap of my disk usage from a program called GrandPerpsective. At the very bottom you can see I have moused over a file and it says: Library/Containers/com.duckduckgo.macos.browser/Data/Library/Application Support/Database.sqlite-wal with a file size of 6.9Gb. There's another file in there (you can see it visually directly beneath) that is another 2Gb. What is my browser doing soaking up 9Gb of disk space? Also, it look like a skin of #Chrome. So, I'm a little less enthusiastic. So yeah, I deleted a bunch of crap I didn't need. But WTH? image
I just learned how to do some uBlock origin cosmetic selectors to remove elements on the page that invite me to use AI or take up screen real estate offering pointless AI summaries. So many web sites use auto-generated CSS class names that you can't match on the actual classes. And you can't be sure that it will actually be 3 <div>s from the root or anything like that. What I really like is the :upward() selector. I can basically match something like <h3>Try our assistant</h3> and then append :upward(3) to tell uBlock that regardless of what their names are, block the entire div 3 levels up because I found the matching text down here. One of the things I'm hiding is a graphical button, so I use its aria-label to match it. Here's some examples: example.com##.genaiPageSummaryButton:upward(8) example.com##span:has-text("Open the Assistant"):upward(3) example.com##a[aria-label="Open automated answers"]:upward(2)
β€˜"This latest move signals that Amazon is likely realizing enough AI-driven productivity gains within corporate teams to support a substantial reduction in force," said Sky Canaves, an eMarketer analyst [with absolutely no evidence or justification, but it still got printed anyway]’ These articles don’t understand cause and effect. This business is not waiting to realise any gains and then use that to plan layoffs. They are firing people to save money. No gains have materialised yet, but they can realise immediate savings by reducing staffing now. They BELIEVE so strongly the AI will make this all OK, that they are not waiting for evidence. So much will run on inertia for a while. The business is highly automated and a lot of the automation is really good. At some point they will have a skeleton crew that can keep things going but cannot innovate or expand. Some future executives will have to take the revenue hit to invest. This current crop of executives is cashing out. They cut staff, make line go up, and earn big bonuses. Then, if things go bad, they move on and leave the mess to the next round of execs. https://www.reuters.com/business/world-at-work/amazon-targets-many-30000-corporate-job-cuts-sources-say-2025-10-27/
I think I will rate this #monsterdon "medium" because it was neither rare, nor well done.
Didn't think I'd use this image 2 #monsterdon weeks in a row, but there you are.
If anybody is using #dell servers in their #homelab and you have super noisy fans, I just discovered this Docker container solution that will set the fans to a reasonable speed. I'm using a 3rd-party PCI SAS controller, and that seems to cause the server to go apeshit. Fans sound like they're ready for liftoff. This fixes it right away. #selfhosting #selfhosted
I have the official Monsterdon T-Shirt. But I also have this one, which I’m wearing tonight and it feels like a #monsterdon shirt. image
