If you want to build an exceptional and exciting life, you need exceptional standards, and you must enforce them onto reality. Most people are lazy and mediocre. If you simply allow them to be themselves, they will ruin everything.
“But that sounds like a dictatorship.”
Look at it this way: when you hire employees for your company, do you carefully screen them and impose your rules, or do you allow random people to work for you and do whatever they want? Does that make you a dictator?
But for this to work, your company must be desirable. If you are Apple, people dream of working for you and will do what is required. If you are a shitty pub, they will probably pass.
So you need to be proactive and strive for excellence, actively managing your world. And this only works if you personally embody the high standards you expect from others.
