to be fair to Discover, it’s gotten mostly decent for me too.
right now Discover seems to mostly match my For You content, but it also mixes in some uspol content from people i don’t know that’s impossible to remove and some other accounts i’ve repeatedly “show less”d
so For You is more granular
many don’t remember but a long time ago the Bluesky app *did* promote a third party feed during onboarding.
maybe it’s time to revisit this?
here’s what didn’t quite work out
RE:
thread (see my responses below), would appreciate insights on segmented pagination. how did it work on twitter? how does it work on mastodon? which clients do it particularly well?
i'm not asking about stuff like "cross-device sync", this is way out there for now; just want to figure out basics
RE:
ok i prototyped this thing. even in algo feeds (like Discover), the previous stuff you've seen gets pushed down after "pull to refresh" instead of being gone completely
and for chronological feeds there's now a "Load More" that fills in the gap between freshest stuff and last stuff you've seen
RE:
ironically i think this is both the blessing of this place and the curse
the fact that this is possible is bananas. it is not possible on any other social network to create your own algorithm (that beats the default one!)
but also, how come we are stuck with a bad default one?
RE:
should bluesky team just take the L and offer to host For You and/or make it default?
i see many reasons why not (depending on third party often ends up being a problem) but how is this the situation that first party can't get its own main feed right.
this is so embarrassing
