It is the same protocol for leaving a shinto shrine in Japan (after you exit the torii gate ⛩️) or a buddhist temple (after exiting the main gate of the temple compound. Turn around and bow deeply once. I am not aware of any specific protocol for leaving a church or chapel but well mannered Japanese tourists probably plays it safe and honors the Christian churches like they would honor Shinto shrines. Also if possible don't walk straight through the center of a torii and never ever under any circumstances step on the threshold of a temple or shrine: step over it. https://hell.twtr.plus/media/e6e4d0ffba7203d72eff01db9115d9a51a1f3472c5845ef4b3a8e368ffc0d629.file https://hell.twtr.plus/media/78fc47cec39d7e685aa4dfc3ddff02bfd0ceb0f18b48d0786897c01793fdc57f.file
Here are some more gorgeous examples of Trønderlån style buildings. Traditionally the houses were simply extended when the older children formed their own families and needed a place to live. The largest can be up to 42m long. https://hell.twtr.plus/media/785aff6a883c5b7f0e0f53af1f2423ea8ef20705e6cd16137f9a68131deb8024.file https://hell.twtr.plus/media/f95b0145c9244153e754f1c215ec2c5cbd9230d66dd2f27b03a03540bdb8b301.file https://hell.twtr.plus/media/c0b05bf0cb88acb00855348ebe41aef16d39acf3f448a5b41439ab9d046dfcad.file https://hell.twtr.plus/media/0a55a99fd21e8c4460c90c4b4fc69f6ba1b40b585a21c413cf7f0581f6e18284.file
A traditional "Trønderlån" style solid log farmhouse built ca. 1800, from the Trøndelag region of Norway. Initially a farmhouse, then accommodation for military officers, then parochial house etc. Now restored to a 19th c. exterior and 1950s interior. Two stories with attic space, at 168m² (1814ft²) footprint on natural stone foundation. The log timber is horizontal and the wooden cladding is vertical. These houses are durable and easily modified, impervious against earthquakes or storms and exceedingly charming. https://hell.twtr.plus/media/5a04618d74c5bb437add0e11ed3eaf4bb4ba873a9a46855b838e0bdda7189592.file https://hell.twtr.plus/media/4face8f239a78f4b9c726bd3f69a4cab463673ab67e81b522256881628d37066.file https://hell.twtr.plus/media/ddf8e903562248aa3170c4e48a4f8415c5f86c65c84a3839afbd42e4cdbd257a.file https://hell.twtr.plus/media/f1165958c260bb2c176d870eca4e74d4d00b045197dd1fc71f09f2825e27001c.file
Norwegian scientific testing on reused timber beams: old timber is just as strong as new timber even after a century in use. This should make it easier to reuse old building materials. In Norway at least. https://www.sintef.no/siste-nytt/2024/sintef-tester-hundre-ar-gamle-lavebjelker/ https://hell.twtr.plus/media/02fc3b982a56dec13882331d069b7a4f41cdc3387c83750328c28a3d990e09c5.file
When Dovre Church in Norway (built 1736, timber frame) was to receive a new cladding in 1840 stone slate was selected. It turns out to have been an extremely clever decision. The cladding after 185 years of freezing winters and wet summers is still in perfect condition and has never needed maintenance. Fans of modern Corten steel cladding will enjoy the interesting patina. Stone slate is along with copper one of the absolute top performers in building material longevity. https://hell.twtr.plus/media/ef73190eb8721c69e854cdc165caaf328614cf7414ee7d7b324ad318c944ccee.file https://hell.twtr.plus/media/99c117d10bf5d278d7a080a8ca51203f13817dfe792a48723cee9322cd858c9f.file https://hell.twtr.plus/media/94d9b0a25ab36b615f6b3f06591e36afd2f011127660f900ea2c3ebf3db5bb65.file https://hell.twtr.plus/media/441edee838a8277524677868fc13b23faf9b9ce0b5aa068522a8ffade5ce036b.file
Sheltered Housing took off in the UK in the mid-1970s, usually defined as place for couples over 55 where children have left home, providing a smaller home or downsizing in a quieter neighborhood. Typically located in rural areas and near villages, they are often modeled on medieval almshouses. Here is Lyefield Court outside Reading, semi-courtyard, 30 homes built in 1983. Sort of charming. https://hell.twtr.plus/media/dd5040107a0f23cdfc9b251c4ca7f39e53adef0a2df7a15f3a8581d6d4890a97.file https://hell.twtr.plus/media/406d4ec682e93348bc25cd845fb43fbb5f6b13f4b91df924c7bc80b428131431.file https://hell.twtr.plus/media/d80a5f82efda0bd558067edb40a0d100426122add21fae6d34ab9fd61796965a.file
