These bricks could have lasted centuries, instead they will probably be gone in a few decades. This is what happens when you repoint mortar joints with cement rather than lime. The cement is harder than the bricks and traps water which expands and eventually destroy the bricks rather than the mortar itself. The mortar joints are supposed to be sacrificed: they can be repaired by any six year old with a butter knife and a bucket. Replacing the brick and cutting out the cement is expensive, complicated, requires machinery, and is time consuming. The historic brick that survived earthquakes and dozens of bombing raids will be lost forever.
