Currently reading The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie. I saw the film once, back in the 20th century, but the book is different experience altogether. The language is strict, but flows so well you hardly notice the complex switching between past and future. A masterclass of writing even though you can tell the end of good writing has come. Muriel Sparks (1918-2006) wrote this in 1961, and it was an instant best-seller. Important for me also, the typesetting is done very wellβbeautifully and easy on the eyes (page-setting merely gets an ok). The beginning of the downfall of literature can be seen even in such a tiny detail as the margin widths.
