In Germany in the middle ages each town or village was tasked with caring for its own poor or needy. The town of Gönningen, in Reutlingen in Baden-Württemberg, built or renovated this first almshouse in the 18th c. (possible over a 16th c. building). With industrialization came a wave of new poor and a second home had to be built (second photo) but this was offered for a rent so the tenants were too poor to have their own homes but still some sort of income. Both today are private homes. Timber frame with wattle and daub infill or brick (adobe or fired brick), more recent fired tile roof. Gönningen was relatively well-off due to its skilled seed and dried fruit trade and the town has several well preserved communal or charitable buildings.
