Not surprisingly the average homes in Jamaica and other Caribbean islands are poorly built and poorly maintained, despite the fact that local vernacular labor intensive but cheap building materials are far better at resisting hurricanes, we see the usual unreinforced concrete blocks and uninsulated corrugated iron roofs. The only good thing about these roof is that they are fast to put up and decent against normal rain. However, it won't be easy for even the staunchest supporters of these countries to motivate this incredibly nonchalant attitude to their own building stock. Poverty isn't the cause or root of this.
