One of the oldest rammed earth buildings in france is the 1296 Salle Héraldique de Diana in Montbrison, Loire. Initially a meeting hall for the local nobility, it has also served as a church hall, a tavern, stables etc. and is since 1866 a heraldry and history museum. The core of the building is rammed earth with a chopped straw mix of low quality, built hurriedly in formwork with walls 1.2m wide. The 1865 renovation covered both the exterior and interior in wood paneling, plaster and ashlar stone to the point that it is impossible to tell it is actually a very simple medieval rammed earth construction.
