Can you spot the white spider on this beautiful wall? This style of "patterned" wood working is called naguri (εζ ) and originated in the cutting patterns made by carpenters in pre-modern Japan using adzes. Few have this skill these days, so handmade examples are rare and expensive, but now it can be imitated with machine tools. I took this photo in Kyoto.
