Government instruct Ofcom to use ‘all powers’ against X, including potential ban Trouble is brewing for social media platform *X* (formerly Twitter) [during the ongoing backlash][1] to its [AI][2], ‘Grok’, for creating sexualised and violent deepfakes of people, mostly women and even children. Now, the government has [instructed media watchdog Ofcom][3] to make use of its full force in tackling the situation. This could include anything up to a complete ban of the site in the UK. ## ‘Disgraceful’ [On January 5,][4] [Ofcom][5] issued a statement on the deepfake pornography on [*X*][6]: > We are aware of serious concerns raised about a feature on Grok on X that produces undressed images of people and sexualised images of children. > > We have made urgent contact with X and xAI to understand what steps they have taken to comply with their legal duties to protect users in the UK. Based on their response we will undertake a swift assessment to determine whether there are potential compliance issues that warrant investigation. For his part, [Elon Musk][7], the owner of *X*, displayed awareness of the AI[ deepfakes][8] on his platform. However, he tried to joke about the trend – even asking Grok to put him in a bikini. Then, on 8 January, PM Keir Starmer [gave an interview on *Greatest Hits Radio*][9] in which he commented on the situation: > This is disgraceful. It’s disgusting. And it’s not to be tolerated… Ofcom has our full support to take action in relation to this. > > It’s unlawful. We’re not going to tolerate it. I’ve asked for all options to be on the table. Likewise, government sources informed *BBC News *that: > We would expect Ofcom to use all powers at its disposal in regard to Grok & X. ## Online Safety Act Ofcom derives its powers regarding X from the[ Online Safety Act.][10] This includes the potential to ask the High Court to prevent the public’s access and payments to offending companies’ websites. Essentially, this would be a full ban on the use of *X* in the UK. In the usually circumstances, that kind of ban would require an investigation. However, Ofcom could potentially skip this step if there is a danger of risk to children or other serious harms — say, if the website was repeatedly generating [child pornography.][11] Musk has previously criticised the UK’s [Online Safety Act][12], stating that it amounts to the “suppression of the people”. Thus far, his pitiful response to the deepfake scandal has been to limit access [to the AI’s image generation feature.][13] Grok posted: > Image generation and editing are currently limited to paying subscribers. Trump travel bans could cause World Cup chaos Travel restrictions could prevent or delay entry to the US for World Cup players, support staff and supporters from four countries. [Iran and Haiti are under a full travel ban][1] while Senegal and the Ivory Coast have a partial ban. Ten matches featuring these teams will take place on US soil during the group stages. The US is hosting the 2026 World Cup along with Canada and Mexico. It remains unclear if all restricted nations will see their players and support staff granted entry to compete. And whether any supporters will be able to enter the country to attend matches. On 16 December 2025, [FIFA Peace Prize winner Donald Trump][2] announced further limitations of foreign nationals entering the US from 1 January 2026: extending the existing bans on twelve countries, extending them to five new ones, and introducing partial restrictions on another 12. ## Unclear if ‘exceptions’ apply to World Cup Whilst Trump’s proclamation states there are “exceptions for certain visa categories like athletes”, there is no clarity as to if this applies to World Cup competitors and their support staff and family members. Furthermore, recently-announced travel restrictions requiring visitors from 42 countries under the ESTA visa waiver programme are due to come into effect on 8 February. These restrictions would require visitors to share five years of social media history, as well as other personal information, to enter the US. With multiple people already denied entry to the US for exercising their freedom of speech on social media, these restrictions could see many people travelling for the World Cup turned away. Israel NGO ban pushes Gaza into the abyss As of 1 January, the operating licenses of 37 international NGOs working in Gaza and the occupied West Bank, including East Jerusalem, have been officially suspended by Israeli authorities. UN human rights chief, Volker Türk, [condemned][3] the move as deliberate and calculated, while [Palestinian NGO Network][4] (PNGO) underlined what they view as a continuation of genocide by depriving Palestinians of a humanitarian response. De-registered organisations can no longer bring international staff or supplies into Occupied Palestinian Territories. So we very strongly refute these allegations, and continue to seek dialogue with the Israeli authorities. ## Gaza’s man-made humanitarian nightmare [MSF staff providing aid in Gaza’s frontlines]MSF mental health counsellor and social worker attend the home of a Palestinian family attacked by settlers in Shi’b al-Butum, West Bank. As Israel tightens the noose on aid organisations, disease is spreading like wildfire. [Winter weather][8] batters the tents of the hundreds of thousands of forcibly displaced., and Israel continues killing and maiming Palestinians on a daily basis. The situation, as San Filippo described it is “nothing short of catastrophic”. The healthcare system in Gaza is holding on by a thread, obliterated throughout the two-year genocide. describing this greater detail, the MSF chief said: > The needs are staggering, and are not being met today. This is due to the deliberate restrictions and delays imposed by the Israeli authorities on the entry of international supplies […] Lack of water, sanitation and nutritious food also mean infections of all types are rife. The Israeli occupation is legally obliged to ensure people’s basic needs are met, and essential supplies are supplied. It must facilitate the delivery of humanitarian aid without obstruction. Revoking the licenses of these NGOs is a blatant violation of the law. The affected NGOs not only bear witness to ‘Israel’s’ war crimes and crimes against humanity. They also actively channel information outside of the Gaza Strip, to inform the public. If they are banned from operating, the information they share with the world will be silenced. ## Weaponising food and aid Suspending their work is also about depriving the civilian population of objects indispensable for their survival. [Neve Gordon][9], a professor of international law told the Canary that the use of food and aid as political tools exist is a long standing practice used by Israeli colonisers. In conversation with the *Canary* he said: > Israel, as the occupying power, is responsible for the needs of the population. The minute it doesn’t do that, it is in contravention of the law. This is also collective punishment, as Israel isn’t targeting specific individuals but the population as a whole. By not allowing these humanitarian organisations to work in the Gaza Strip and the West Bank, Israel is abdicating this responsibility big time. The first move was to subject UNRWA — the largest and most experienced aid group in Gaza — to a smear campaign. ‘Israel’ claimed, [without evidence][10], that 12 out of [13,000 UNRWA][11] employees in Gaza were members of Hamas or Islamic Jihad activists. Then there was the creation of the ‘Gaza Humanitarian Foundation’ (GHF), a joint ‘Israeli’ / US venture. TUC calls on employers to show ‘common sense and understanding’ as extreme weather hits UK Storm Goretti has brought extreme weather to the UK with [the Met Office issuing a ‘red warning’][1] for parts of the country. The Trades Union Congress (TUC) has called on employers not to force staff to take excessive risks by making dangerous journeys to work. The TUC says employers must show understanding and not punish workers who cannot travel to work safely. For example, by withholding pay or making them use their holiday. ## Bad weather policies The TUC suggests that all employers have clear weather policies to set out what staff should do when snow and ice, or a lack of public transport, prevents them from getting to work. These should also cover what parents can do if schools close and they have no alternative childcare. Also, when snow causes problems on the UK’s transport network, it makes sense for employers to encourage and enable staff who can do so to [work from home][2]. That’s better than struggling with a lengthy, risky and difficult commute to and from work. ## Minimum temperature The TUC is also reminding employers to keep their workplaces safe during the cold weather. Official health and safety law says the temperature should normally be at least 16C . Or 13C if much of the work indoors involves severe physical effort. And bosses should also ensure entrances to workplaces are gritted and not slippery. Those boycotts are frequently a cover for attacking Jewish people and culture. ## The spectre of Thatcherism The enthusiasm for attacking local democracy is nothing new, of course. It was a [key plank of Thatcherism][14]. The hideous crone saw Labour-controlled councils as a key opposing force to her neoliberal agenda. The Conservative government of the 1980s oversaw brutal cuts to local government funding, alongside rate-capping which also hit the spending power of councils. This shredding of devolved powers makes Britain [one of the most centralised nations in the world][15], with enormous power concentrated in Westminster. Combined with a first-past-the-post voting system, this allows a tiny minority – sometimes called a parliamentary dictatorship – to force through policies with little mandate or opposition. Democracy is now being further eroded through stances like Reed’s, and the [destruction of protest rights][16]. BREAKING: US ‘border patrol’ shoots two people in Portland OR – or is it ICE again? US media are [reporting][1] that ‘Border Patrol’, or ‘Customs and Border Protection’ federal agents in Southeast Portland, Oregon near the US west coast on Thursday afternoon 8 January. ## Portland Border Patrol shooting However, Portland is not a border city, raising questions about whether the ‘federal agents’ were really CBP – or were again Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) thugs and the authorities did not want to announce that ICE had shot two more people after the [murder of Renee Nicole Good in Minneapolis a day earlier][2]. The Trump regime and Trump’s Department of Homeland Security (DHS) head Kristi Noem have [brought CBP into many non-border cities to support ICE][3]. In some states, DHS has installed CBP agents to run ICE units, so the line between the two organisations is not clear-cut. Therefore, it is not clear cut at present what role border patrol were playing in Portland. The regime may wish to obscure the involvement of ICE in the shootings amid the nationwide backlash over the murder of Ms Good – or the announcement may be part of the Trump administration’s general strategy of confusion and contradiction. [Noem has told Minneapolis police to “butt out”][4] of the Good investigation. There is currently no word on the condition of the shooting victims, or whether local law enforcement will be allowed to investigate. Gaza childhood on crutches: Rateb carries on with a pipe for a leg In a narrow courtyard surrounded by rubble, Rateb Abu Qaleq no longer runs after his football as he did before the war. Instead, Rateb is now learning to walk again, this time on crutches. His prosthetic leg made of plastic tubing makes for a scene that sums up the harsh reality of childhood in the Gaza [Strip][1]. Rateb, a Palestinian child of about ten years old, has nothing left of his childhood but his memory. Before the war, the alleys were his playground and the ball was his constant companion. Today, his balance is a daily struggle, and walking on its own is an achievement that requires courage. ## Childhood in Gaza One of the Israeli raids changed everything for him. Rateb was with his mother and siblings when the missile struck. His small body survived, but at a price: his right leg was amputated, and his mother and brother were killed. Rateb left the [hospital][2] with a missing leg, a destroyed home, and a health situation that prevented him from completing his treatment. In a sector ravaged by war and siege, there are not enough prosthetic limbs, rehabilitation programmes, or equipment to give injured children the chance to return to a near-normal life. With the help of relatives and friends, he resorted to a rudimentary solution: [a plastic water pipe][3] attached to the stump of his leg. It is a harsh and painful substitute, but it allows him to stand. It does not give him comfort or real security, but it gives him the ability to move — even if only with slow and painful steps. Every step he takes hurt him twofold: a physical pain and the pain of being reminded of his loss. Nevertheless, Rateb insists on walking. He watches his friends playing from afar but cannot join them. He says, “What I would give to play like them.” ## Rateb is not alone Rateb is one of hundreds of children in Gaza who lost limbs during the war. Today is a time when hospitals are unable to provide basic treatment, let alone prosthetic limbs or rehabilitation programmes. His childhood, like that of many others, has been put on hold by a military/political decision and a collapsed health system. Every day, Rateb asks himself a silent question: Why did he survive? He survived death, but every morning he faces the test of survival in Gaza. A child with a pipe for a leg, a memory weighed down by loss, and a simple dream that is still possible: to walk without pain, and to play… and that the war never returns. Tesco’s festive profits soar – so why does that not mean cheaper food for us? Tesco just released its [third-quarter and festive trading statement][1], and surprise surprise – the supermarket giant is making a killing. Of course, massive profits aren’t that hard to come by when you price-gouge at every opportunity. In fact, [over the last four years][2], Tesco’s operating profits have shot up by a massive 72%. Meanwhile, [food prices][3] in the UK have also increased by a staggering 40%. We wonder what the relationship between the two figures could possibly be? ## Thanks and peanuts to Tesco In a company press release accompanying the figures, Tesco [chief executive][4] Ken Murphy boasted: > I am delighted with the strong Christmas we delivered for our customers. Our investments in value, quality and service drove further gains in customer satisfaction and strong growth in fresh food, contributing to our highest UK market share in over a decade… > > I would like to thank all our colleagues for the exceptional service they have given to our customers over this important period; this has been a real team effort. We are well positioned for the year ahead and remain committed to ensuring customers get the best possible value by shopping at Tesco. Well that’s just lovely, isn’t it? It’s funny that Murphy should mention his Tesco ‘colleagues’, actually. You know who else mentioned Tesco staff in in a press release today? [Unite][5] the union general secretary[ Sharon Graham.][6] Responding to Tesco’s latest glowing trading figures, Graham said: > While workers and their families, including Tesco’s own workers, are still struggling with rampant food inflation, Tesco is paying out millions in shareholder dividends and their executive pay has soared. This sort of rampant profiteering is simply a disgrace, and it must be stopped. Isn’t it funny how often massive profits turn into shareholder [dividends][7] and gold-plated salaries for board members – they never seem to translate into higher wages for the staff whose work actually generates those profits. ## Out-performing predictions Back in October of last year, the *Canary *[reported on][8] Tesco’s profiteering whilst Ken Murphy begged the chancellor not to raise corporate taxes. At the time, we wrote that the retail giant: > posted an adjusted operating profit increase of 10.6% for 2024-2025 alone. This was far ahead of the 5.1% increase in the price of food in all retailers across the country in the same period, and even further above the 3.8% level of inflation overall. > > Then, Tesco shares reached a 12-year high yesterday, 2 October. Its half-year sales (for the six months to August 23) went up 5.1%, reaching £33bn. The price of its individual shares went up by 5.3%. The retail giant now expects a profit of between £2.9 and £3.1bn for 2025 overall, up from a previous forecast of £2.7-£3bn. Now, following the third quarter and Christmas, that forecast adjusted operating profit has climbed even higher, reaching the upper end of the £2.9bn to £3.1bn range. So, Tesco’s profits are doing – quite literally – as well as the supermarket could have dared to hope. With all of that excess cash, maybe Murphy and the board could spare some for their workers?
