Yesterday, there was a Mercedes 300 SL "Gullwing" on my gym parking lot. Back then, at $6,800 it cost twice as much as a Corvette and many consider it to be the world's first supercar. Only 1,400 of these coupés were built from 1954 to 1957. This monster came in with a 215 hp 3.0L inline-6 with fuel injection, which was absolute peak German engineering that put everything else to shame.
Nowadays, these cars trade around 1.5 million dollars, which is a 7.3% CAGR, and I'll get one once #Bitcoin hits parity.
The scientific method should be the go-to way of trying to understand something. However, in a situation of strong politicization of a complex societal issue, such as Covid, climate change, Gaza or Bitcoin, it becomes essential to add Bro-Science to your approach of trying to understand things.
Bro-Science is most powerful when you're part of the analyzed system yourself and its 'test cycles' are relatively short. This allows you to collect many personal data points that the confused & archaic 'The Science ™' people dismiss as anecdotes. Incorporating these data points into your analysis becomes important when your gut tells you that the common narrative's math ain't mathing.
If you used Bro-Science as an additional tool you were able to:
- brutally outperform Taleb by DCAing Bitcoin
- recognize that banning children from kicking around a ball outdoors due to Covid is a net negative
- recognize we understand climate change much less than it's commonly presented as
In contrast, for me, Bro-Science is a relatively weak tool at analyzing the Gaza conflict, as I don't have any personal or friends' experiences of the conflict.
In short:
Trust your gut. Don't disregard your own experiences & thoughts on a complex matter just because someone with a fancy title tells you they ought to be disregarded. That loser weirdo probably can't even bench 100kg anyways (125 kg hip thrust for queens).
