basically what happened is i keep putting away migrating to the new PC even though i had built it like 2 years ago but i want to move to Florida before opening that can of worms so it was just easier / faster to replace a limping GPU on the old PC ...
what happened is the $10,000 ( MSRP ) screen on the new PC has died and rather than buying new one and then moving a 85" screen to Florida i want to move first and then buy a new screen.
i also don't want to physically move a 70 lbs workstation from one room to another either and then copy all my data etc.
g-d willing simply swapping a GPU should be plug and play as the new one i ordered is the same form factor as the old one and should even run on the same drivers. it should just be 4 years and 2 generations newer, with 5X the power and 8GB VRAM instead of 3GB.
a while back i noticed in the task manager performance tab i am ALWAYS using 2 out of 3 GB of VRAM even with nothing running. that was my first clue that maybe it's time for a new GPU. there were other clues as well. i just couldn't find one that made logical sense for this particular PC until now.
then today i saw a refurbished card that was exactly what i was looking for ( except it was a fucking Zotac and obviously i wanted an Asus but it was 30% less than Asus with the same GPU and VRAM so i said i will give it a shot - don't need it to last forever - only need it to last about a year to give me time to migrate to the new PC )
i also purchased one year warranty for it for $20 from Newegg

i get a new desktop every 6-7 years or so, a new laptop every 4-5 years or so and a new phone every 3-4 years or so
i keep all my desktops for as long as they work, but for phones and laptops i keep only the latest one and give the old ones to my parents
posting this now because i just ordered a new GPU for my 8 year old desktop, which is the oldest of the three computers i use. the GPU is a refurbished RTX 3070 so it is itself 4 years old, but that is half the age of GTX 1060 that it will replace. it made no sense to get anything better as i already have RTX 4080 in two other computers ( a real one in a desktop and a mobile in a laptop ). but more importantly the old mobo doesn't have PCIE 5.0 anyway so i figured to save some money and get GPU that is on a PCIE standard closer to that of the mobo it's going into.
the GTX 1060 was struggling pretty bad with just regular everyday stuff like YouTube ( it's driving a 4K HDR screen ) but i won't throw it out ! i will move it to an even older PC that i haven't used in years but is still in working condition ! that old PC is hooked up to a 1080p screen and GTX 1060 should do better there.
my Razer Basilisk V3 Pro mouse stopped charging wirelessly on the Samsung charger.
first time it happened removing and installing the puck solved the problem. second time ( a few months later, today ) it solved it for like 5 minutes but then it stopped charging again. i removed the puck and plugged the USB cable into the mouse to charge over a wire like a peasant.
the good news is it charges really fast over the cable ... but that's not good enough. i bought it specifically for wireless charging and spent extra $20 on the puck and more money on the Samsung charger which had to be the "Duo" model to fit the physical shape of the mouse. all in i spent about $200 on this mouse, puck and charger only to have it stop working after less than 3 years.
now you may say 3 years is enough to get out of a mouse but i believe in replacing products when *I* feel like replacing them not when the manufacturer decides it's time for me to buy a new one. that was the problem with Logitech - their products ALWAYS stopped working right out of warranty. and i am NOT OKAY with this.
my OVERALL history with Razer products is still OKAY overall but this is a major strike against Razer. i vowed never to use Logitech after 3 strikes like this.
actually i already have 2 strikes against Razer with this mouse. not only the wireless puck doesn't work but it is impossible to install and remove without using special rubber gloves i have that give you extra grip. it is an unacceptably poor design. Logitech had the puck held by magnets and it popped out effortlessly. with Razer there is literally NOTHING to grab on to when you have to twist the puck in or out. it was bad enough they created such a shit design and to add insult to injury now it doesn't even work anymore.
one more fuck up from Razer and i will be looking for another brand of Mice and Mousepads ( my Razer Acari Mousepad is incredible ) ...
and i am ALREADY at a point where i won't consider their laptop, because replacing a $150 mouse is one thing but replacing a $4,000 laptop is something else !
i know Razer never had a reputation for reliability but it's one thing when you read about it and another when it happens to you.
