15 December 1941 | A Polish priest, Piotr Dańkowski, was registered with the number 24529 in Auschwitz. After being transferred to Birkenau in March 1942, he became the target of exceptionally brutal harassment by prisoner functionaries. Before the Holy Week, they announced that they would organize a "Way of the Cross" for him. In the days that followed, one of the kapos named Hans forced him to carry a beam on his shoulders, beating him constantly. image
15 December 1922 | A Polish Jew, Henryk Mandelbaum, was born in Olkusz. In #Auschwitz from 22 April 1944. No. 181970 He escaped during evacuation. One of the few surviving Sonderkommando prisoners forced to work in gas chambers and crematoria. He passed away in 2008. image
15 December 1924 | German Jewish woman, Esther Bejarano (nee Löwy), was born in Saarlouis. In #Auschwitz from April 1943. She played accordion in the women’s orchestra. She was transferred to the Ravensbrück concentration camp for women. She escaped from an evacuation march. After the war, she lived in Israel and became a singer before returning to Germany in 1960. She dedicated the rest of her life to educating people about the Holocaust and fighting xenophobia. She passed away in 2021.
15 December 1902 | Turkish Jewish woman, Victorine Sissa, was born in Constantinople. She emigrated to France. She was deported to #Auschwitz from #Drancy on 28 September 1942. She did not survive. image
