24 August 1905 | Dutch Jewish woman, Debora Gans, was born in Amsterdam. She emigrated to Belgium. She was deported to #Auschwitz from Kazerne Dossin in Mechelen on 15 September 1943. She did not survive.

23 August 1940 | A Belgian Jewish girl, Simone Frajermauer, was born in Brussels. She arrived at #Auschwitz on 2 August 1943 in a transport of 1,553 Jews deported from Kazerne Dossin in Mechelen. She was among 1,087 of them murdered in a gas chamber after the selection.

23 August 1920 | A Pole, Tadeusz Lojewski, was born in Warsaw. A bookbinder. In #Auschwitz from 25 February 1941. No. 10872 He perished in the camp on 7 August 1941.

23 August 1942 | A transport of 1,000 Jews deported from Drancy arrived at Auschwitz. SS doctors selected 892 of them to be murdered in gas chambers. Among them was Majta Rubin. She was a Polish Jewish woman who had emigrated to France. 23 August 1888 | Italian Jewish woman, Enrica Coen, was born in Ancona. She was deported to #Auschwitz from Roma on 18 October 1943. She was most probably murdered in a gas chamber after arrival selection.

23 August 1925 | Jewish boy, David Karmazyn, was born in Luxembourg. He emigrated to Belgium. He was deported to #Auschwitz from Kazerne Dossin in Mechelen on 4 August 1942. He did not survive.

23 August 1942 | A Polish soldier Józef Sopotnicki perished in the German Auschwitz camp. He was a colonel of the Polish army, awarded with Poland's highest military decoration - War Order of Virtuti Militari. Out of at least 1,515 Polish officers imprisoned by the Germans in KL Auschwitz 926 perished in this or another concentration camp (162 of them were executed by shooting). 31 attempted escapes (2 were unsuccessful). 41 officers were released from the camp.

23 August 1923 | A Polish woman, Zofia Posmysz, was born. In #Auschwitz from 30 May 1942. No. 7566 She was evacuated to KL Ravensbrück. Liberated in Neustadt-Glewe. A journalist, writer, and author of 'The Passenger.’ Zofia passed away on 8 August 2022.
