The grizzly sow and her two cubs observed for the first time on Vancouver Island last summer have been seen together again in April and until a week ago. When I visited that area on Monday, I saw only one of the cubs. No sign of the sow and the other cub. There could be two reasons: the cubs are now on their own because they are old enough to fend for themselves or they've been illegally killed by individuals / entities that don't want grizzlies to settle on the island. Looking for the answer...
May 29 is #WorldOtterDay Can you tell the difference between a river otter and a sea otter? 🤔 #wildlife #photography #VancouverIsland #BritishColumbia #VancouverIslandWildlife
This morning I didn't see the two killdeer chicks born on Monday. There are predators like snakes and lizards there so it would explain their absence. However I saw a couple of killdeer reproducing so there is hope for more chicks in the summer. #BirdsOfMastodon #photography #wildlife #VancouverIslandWildlife #VancouverIsland #BritishColumbia image
I stayed home today like this European starling (Sturnus vulgaris), which I photographed last week. I have hundreds of photos to process of wildflowers, birds and a grizzly. I don't like to accumulate a backlog so I always sort, process and archive my photos right away. #BirdsOfMastodon #photography #wildlife #VancouverIsland #BritishColumbia #VancouverIslandWildlife image
For #WildlifeWednesday I have an update on the eaglets: they're being well fed by both parents, they awkwardly stretch those big wings once a while, bicker like true siblings and spend the rest of their time napping. #birds #BirdsOfMastodon #photography #wildlife #VancouverIsland #BritishColumbia #VancouverIslandWildlife #WildlifePhotography image
It looks like grizzly bears (brown bears) are moving back to Vancouver Island. Last year a sow was observed with two cubs. For some time now grizzlies seen in North Vancouver Island have been allegedly ''disposed of'', which is illegal in BC. Everybody has an opinion about their potential permanent presence, from people who enjoy the wilderness to small communities, hunters, poachers, mining companies, biologists, governments, etc. My opinion is let nature be and be bear aware!
Two killdeer chicks (Charadrius vociferus) born this morning on the shoreline of Vancouver Island. Edit: I kept a very safe distance and used a telephoto lens. The photo is cropped. #birds #wildlife #photography #VancouverIsland #BritishColumbia #VancouverIslandWildlife image

I like this photo, it is actually featured in one of my books. I had to lie on the ground to create this intimate portrait. Sometimes I return home wet and muddy, twigs and moss in my hair, and that for me is a good day in the field. #FungiFriday #mushrooms #photography #nature #VancouverIsland #BritishColumbia #VancouverIslandWildlife image
