I had a very disconcerting experience last night. Driving south from Split in Croatia on a very big highway, there's a last turn for Dubrovnik, and then the highway crosses the border into Bosnia. It's after sunset and the border crossing is empty apart from the border guards, you can hear the crickets buzzing.
