Rioters promoting racist hate do not have legitimate political concerns. On the other hand, millions of people who are concerned about inequality, poor jobs, failing public services and poor housing have wholly appropriate grievances in the UK. Tackle those, and the opportunity for racists would disappear.

But until Labour realises that it has to tackle inequality, those promoting violence will exploit the anger of those left behind to secure support for their cause. The choice is for Labour to make, but so far it is sending out the message that it intends to promote inequality. Are they really surprised people are angry as a result? They have to change tack.
