BeetBear got the remaining corn from this summer's crop pulled up and into the cart. He always plans it so that the first hill planted is the last one removed. Before removal he stops to pay his respects to the corn spirits and give thanks for the excellent crop supplied. He says dad can take care of the shredding business, because he isn't going anywhere near that noisy contraption. 😀 #gardening #Allotment #BeetBear #SweetCorn #NewEngland #zone6b @gardening
We have some VERY mature American arborvitae (Thuja occidentalis) which are reaching over 40 feet (12 meters) bordering one side of the property. My father planted them in the 1950's and they're still going strong. This time of year it's getting ready a HUGE crop of seeds and the birds love them. #gardening #Allotment #birds #Botany #NewEngland #zone6b @npub1v5ap...ny6w image
It's a nice, dry, cool-ish day so it's time to start clearing out the corn stalks. We use a garden fork to make sure we get up a lot of the roots and stack everything up off the ground, getting ready for the shredder. We LOVE our sweet corn, so we don't mind the effort of cleanup. Had a good year. 😀 🌽 #gardening #SweetCorn #Allotment #NewEngland #zone6b @npub1v5ap...ny6w
BeetBear is preparing a little thank-you present for all our chipmunk friends for being nice this season and not taking more than their fair share of the garden produce. Next up: clearing the corn patch. 😀 #gardening #Allotment #BeetBear #NewEngland #zone6b @npub1v5ap...ny6w image
Things are winding down now, but BeetBear still found veg. to share with the neighbors today. It made our day when a young lady and her grandma stopped by with a thank-you note for us. It's very dry again. We have had no rain since a light shower on 20-Aug. Tomatoes are heavily mulched, so they're ok. Peppers, eggplant and yellow squash seem to be holding up, too. Will probably start to "deconstruct" the corn patch tomorrow. 😀 #gardening #Allotment #BeetBear #NewEngland #zone6b @npub1v5ap...ny6w
