#deltachat works despite some ongoing state level blocking and is used by people in bad network situations. That is all fine. But does it also work in german ICE train wifi? Happy to report: Yes, not only message sending and receiving work reliably in the train but we could also instantly use a webxdc realtime app between different trains, with peer-to-peer connections :) Greetings and good travels everyone! #38c3
Is it necessary to carry on family or community hierarchies into chat groups? With #deltachat any group member has agency to add/remove people and to clone the group and leave out/add some members. Works pretty well for small/mediun sized groups where people know each other. For larger and especially for public groups it's more tricky and some form of moderation is typically wanted. It's entirely possible to use cryptography to establish such hierarchies. We are not rushing for it, though.
There are sometimes discussions about an end-to-end encrypted private social media e-mail chat network 🀯 Basically you could follow delta chat profiles and subscribe and probably react to their encrypted broadcasts .... This and many other discussions are the "humus" on which #deltachat evolves and, for example, became a super-app: Android 1.50.3 spearheads direct #webxdc app picking via the "attach" chat action. Actually #cheogram and #monocles, both #xmpp messengers, released this first!
Wow, a nice surprise! We just heart that @npub1hcrw...mtkx are to donate 4K EUR to our developments -- see their post (which unfortunately doesn't currently federate correctly it seems) Their web page: Thanks a lot! ❀️ (FWIW we have a money-contribution page at and are happy about donations to mitigate a potential financial crunch early next year) image
In many ways, #deltachat deals with typical peer to peer challenges. The message transport is treated as dumb, so it can not host group membership metadata or key directories like #WhatsApp, @Signal and #telegram do. Our dumb-server protocol philosophy is also very unlike #matrix which has very stateful servers with lots of relational metadata and required synchronization state. So #p2p networking like recently introduced for #webxdc realtime channels flows rather naturally for us ....
On the occasion of Russia today testing regional blocks of telegram and other apps (especially in eastern Russia) and #WhatsApp down or flaky in many countries the last hours ... Allow us to note that it is very hard to block or bring down #deltachat apps on any larger scale because A) it's hard to block the planetary email server network B) #chatmail servers have some extras :) C) DNS blocks won't work D) you can use shadowsocks/socks5 proxies easily on android/iOS Sorry not sorry :)
"You app is not compliant" ... says the lawyer-speak automated mail that cancels the bug-fix android release we just uploaded, referencing "Version code 705: Policy Declaration - Data Safety Section: Personal Info Data Type - Name". That's about the only information they provide. Nothing more specific. Another release earlier in the week went through. FWIW our apps do not transfer a "name" anywhere else than to chat partners, using end-to-end encryption and e-mail servers that users choose.
major milestones with #deltachat in 2024 so far: - addressed security analysis issues from Applied Crypto Group at ETH Zurich for hardened guaranteed end-to-end encryption - instant onboarding in all apps with #chatmail servers (likely the fastest, most secure and reliable e-mail servers you can find on this planet) - push notifications on Android/iOS with all #chatmail servers - introduction of #P2P networking with #webxdc realtime channels ... and the year is not quite over yet :)
We are not all in the same boat .... This is as true for security and feature design of messengers as it is in the larger political happenings. Often security hackers and enthusiasts living in personally safe environments are offering strong opinions on what is important for everybody in repressive situations without engaging with people on the ground, and just looking from some abstract view. We are an in-between project. #deltachat is in-between traditional messengers and email apps and #p2p paradigms, #chatmail is in between the massive email server network and #webxdc is in-between e-mail, @npub1gw62...2up6 and the web ecosystem (but outlaws central platforms) ... Our approach is rhizomatic, i.e. based on, and changes with, various collaborations and joining contributors. We don't have stable funding and need to regularly apply for public funds ... And are surrounded by VC funded projects
