Unexpected kitteh in the harvest area! It seems #glitterkitten has chosen to bless the #allotment with its presence again. image
Kat asked for bottled shop water for some fancy matcha recently obtained. Which makes a lot of sense given our super-hard water really sucks for tea. We do have a filter but it's not the sort that changes the water hardness. This morning Kat made my usual morning Chemex #coffee brew with the bottled water. Damn. It's noticeably better... cleaner, brighter... Now I need to either invest in better filtration or start buying bottled water for coffee making. :( For reference the average/approx hardness of our water supply according to the water supplier is 328.46 mg/l CaCO3 (that 0.46 is important, I'm sure, lol). The Co-Op brand "mineral water" I bought has 18.6 mg/l calcium and 5.1 mg/l magnesium... which is equivalent to a hardness/CaCO3 of 66.45 mg/l
Chemical tap bottle
Calcium 126.983 18.6
Magnesium 2.765 5.1
Potassium 2.576 0.89
Sodium 15.777 14.4
Chloride 70.4 27.4
Sulphate <27.9 14.8
Nitrate <0.002 8.1

pH 7.48 6.7

Hot on the heels of #allotment postcard 33 we have caught up a week to postcard 34... aka just last weekend: spider mites, bedding in new beds, katscavations, garlic smoothie, scrumped plums
#Allotment Postcard 33 for August 10th & 13th done and up: Somewhat infused with the ennui I was feeling that weekend. A bit vague. Usual waffle. Got some wood down the farm, observed some seedlings, grumped about rodents, did some good work building the front gate, mutant tomato plant, crops, crops, crops.
Hey #Cambridge (UK) folks, the good people of Daily Bread are renovating and in need of some supplies: https://freecycle.org/posts/100015930
40 litres of pure brilliant white matt emulsion

1 litre of metal primer

1 litre of grey metal paint

Bright red/bright orange/bright yellow/bright green 500mls satinwood paint

2 x extendable paint poles

Metal garden rake

Manual push along lawn mower
If you don't already know it, it's a great local indie place for a range of wholefoods and ethical/eco products.
Pizza night! Experimental "zucchini crust pizza" — 580g blended zucchini and only 50ml water is the "wet" in the dough. "New" Freecycle oven did a good job with the stone in it. One pizza is Margherita style with three different tomato varieties and three different basil varieties from the #allotment; and the other generally random with some polish salami, zucchini crisps, shallot, and rocket.
Ideas for that #allotment glut:
