A friend got in touch at the weekend to ask: “Will the new leadership in Syria be better than the old regime?” My reply was this: “A month ago, there didn’t seem to be much chance for most victims of atrocities in #Syria to ever see justice. Today, there’s a chance.”
Two colleagues just returned from Renk, South Sudan, interviewing people who’ve lost everything as they fled the atrocity-ridden conflict in #Sudan. Losing possessions has been devastating. It's amazing how authoritarian regimes that have been in place for years can so suddenly be driven from power. The horrors they inflict are real, but their stability is ultimately an illusion.
